class=\"bFOZY\"><strong><em>Helicobater Pylori (H. Pylori)<\/em><\/strong> is a type of bacteria that resides in the stomach. <\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block5\">The stomach was long considered inhabitable by bacteria until it\u2019s discovery around the 1990\u2019s. It was found that <strong><em>H.Pylori<\/em><\/strong> was able to secrete urease that converts urea to ammonia. Ammonia is a basic substance that neutralizes the stomach acid and allows the bacteria to live. As <strong><em>H. Pylori<\/em><\/strong> multiply, it eats into stomach tissue, which leads to <strong>gastritis and\/or peptic ulcer<\/strong>. This means that poor sanitary conditions \/ poor hygiene are the leading cause of <strong><em>H.Pylori<\/em><\/strong> transmission and infection. Among those infected are mainly children due to this reason.<\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block15\">A local study of H. Pylori prevalence in Malaysia has shown a <strong>49% prevalence rate<\/strong> of <strong><em>H. pylori<\/em><\/strong><strong> infection<\/strong> among west coast Malaysians exhibiting indigestion symptoms (dyspepsia), with the prevalence of 16.4% in the Malays, 48.5% in Chinese and 61.8% in Indians.<\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block19\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><h2 id=\"viewer-8e4le\" class=\"IvLU9 ncNbG _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Mc15w\"><strong>What are the symptoms of H. Pylori infection? <\/strong><\/span><\/h2><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block20\">Most people infected with the bateria do not have any symptoms, not until complications such as peptic ulcer have developed.<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-7ngm6\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">However, there are a number of symptoms that are associated with the infection:- <\/span><\/p><\/div><ul><li data-hook=\"rcv-block23\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">Bloatedness <\/span><\/li><li data-hook=\"rcv-block24\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">Nausea\/ vomitting <\/span><\/li><li data-hook=\"rcv-block25\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">Heartburn <\/span><\/li><li data-hook=\"rcv-block26\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">Excessive burping <\/span><\/li><li data-hook=\"rcv-block27\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">A dull stomach pain that does not go away <\/span><\/li><li data-hook=\"rcv-block28\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">Dyspepsia <\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span class=\"bFOZY\">Consult your doctor immediately if you are having: <\/span><\/p><ul><li class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\">Loss of weight\/ loss of apetite with trouble swallowing \/ early satiety\/ feeling very full after a small meal<\/li><li class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\">Symptoms of anemia such as fainting\/ reduce effort tolerance<\/li><li dir=\"auto\">Blood in stool, or black\/ dark tarry stools (melena)<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-737a53c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"737a53c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How can I screen\/ diagnose H.Pylori infection?<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d80cf80 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"d80cf80\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"687\" height=\"665\" src=\"https:\/\/hemedicalclinic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/802c27_ced4978f10e44d9db909126c3475a8c5mv2.webp?wsr\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-2505\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hemedicalclinic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/802c27_ced4978f10e44d9db909126c3475a8c5mv2.webp 687w, https:\/\/hemedicalclinic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/802c27_ced4978f10e44d9db909126c3475a8c5mv2-300x290.webp 300w, https:\/\/hemedicalclinic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/802c27_ced4978f10e44d9db909126c3475a8c5mv2-12x12.webp 12w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 687px) 100vw, 687px\" title=\"\">\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fb169d8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fb169d8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div data-breakout=\"normal\"><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-7ipck\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">The mentioned above are the screening modalities for the bacteria within clinic settings. \u2018Sensitivity\u2019 represents the accuracy of a positive result whilst \u2018specificity\u2019 represents the accuracy of a negative result.<\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-eqdf0\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">The gold standard for H.Pylori testing is the Urea Breath Test (UBT).<\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-abpbl\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">The Antibody detection test requires blood taking while the SAT requires stool collection. <\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block46\">At hospital settings where endoscopy is available, a tissue sample could be taken during endoscopy and tested for the presence of H.Pylori.<\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block47\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><h2 id=\"viewer-9087f\" class=\"IvLU9 ncNbG _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Mc15w\"><strong>Can H.Pylori infection be treated? <\/strong><\/span><\/h2><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block51\">Yes, it is absolutely treatable.<\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block51\">The treatment regime for H.Pylori infection involves a combination of three drugs, called <strong>\u2018triple therapy\u2019<\/strong>.<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-e2560\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">In a nutshell, triple therapy consists of 2 antibiotics and 1 proton pump inhibitor (PPI). The 2 antibiotics are for the bacteria eradication, while the PPI reduces the gastric acid, helping the gastric lining heal. <\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block57\">The current most widely used regime:<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><ol class=\"jozXz _5HuoZ\"><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-8p59e\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\"><strong>Proton pump inhibitor <\/strong>(PPI) (eg, omeprazole 20 mg BID, lansoprazole 30 mg BID, esomeprazole 40 mg QD, pantoprazole 40 mg QD, rabeprazole 20 mg BID) <em>plus<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-9efe8\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\"><strong>Clarithromycin 500 mg BD <\/strong>(first-line and continues to be recommended in areas where <em>H pylori<\/em> clarithromycin resistance is less than 15% and in patients without previous macrolide exposure \u200b) or <strong>metronidazole 500 mg BD<\/strong> (when clarithromycin resistance is increasing) <em>plus<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-ed0tb\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\"><strong>Amoxicillin 1000 mg BD or metronidazole 500 mg BD <\/strong>(if not already selected)<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ol><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block60\">The treatment should be at an optimal period of 14 days.<\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block61\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><div id=\"viewer-2n2rr\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\">There have also been recent literatures promoting the use of probiotics (such as <em>L.Bacillus Reuteri <\/em>)in adjunct with the triple therapy. It was found that the use of probiotics during triple therapy has significantly reduce gastric side effects accompanying the intensive treatment of antibiotics.<\/div><\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-b422f\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">Retesting of H.Pylori infection should be performed 4 weeks after completion of antibiotics to confirm eradication.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33
