Whether or not we like it, the probability of contracting the virus at any region could be substantial, and should not be taken lightly because of the potential harm it can bring. <\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block8\">Although most individuals infected with COVID-19 get better within weeks, a small number of patients continue to experience symptoms that can last up to months after first being infected, or may develop new\/recurring symptoms at a later time. Many have reported these symptoms despite recovery from COVID-19, even if the initial illness was mild.<\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block9\">This condition is known as \u201c<strong>long COVID<\/strong>\u201d, and has been one of the issues actively addressed by the WHO.<\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block11\">Examples of<strong> long COVID<\/strong> symptoms include extreme tiredness, difficulty breathing, palpitations, insomnia, changes to smell and taste, and finally, reports of development or worsening of erectile dysfunction.<\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block14\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><h2 id=\"viewer-6vp2q\" class=\"IvLU9 ncNbG _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Mc15w\">What\u2019s causing it? <\/span><\/h2><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block16\">As of now, multiple researches are ongoing to find out the link between the virus and erectile dysfunction (ED). ED, in simple words, is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance.<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-379nh\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">One of the first studies regarding this issue, led by Dr. Emmanuele A. Jannini, MD, professor of endocrinology, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Rome, Italy, was published around March 2021. In this study, it was shown that COVID-19 <strong>increases the risk of developing ED by nearly a staggering figure of six times<\/strong><a class=\"JFeVX Lvqid\" href=\"https:\/\/manage.wix.com\/dashboard\/3c559c23-91ca-4f51-9429-f2e89bf7ab3c\/blog\/create-post#_ftn1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hook=\"WebLink\">[1]<\/a>. Those numbers remained even after other factors considered.<\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block20\">Within the study, many possible explanations were being highlighted to explain the link between COVID-19 and ED.<\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block20\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><h2 id=\"viewer-fbi7o\" class=\"IvLU9 ncNbG _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"Mc15w\">Endothelial dysfunction \u2013 the link between COVID-19 and ED<\/span><\/h2><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-71c7258 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"71c7258\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"412\" height=\"239\" src=\"https:\/\/hemedicalclinic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/802c27_78844fc5a7d3422d84bd0bde7cd94e78mv2.webp?wsr\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-2498\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hemedicalclinic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/802c27_78844fc5a7d3422d84bd0bde7cd94e78mv2.webp 412w, https:\/\/hemedicalclinic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/802c27_78844fc5a7d3422d84bd0bde7cd94e78mv2-300x174.webp 300w, https:\/\/hemedicalclinic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/802c27_78844fc5a7d3422d84bd0bde7cd94e78mv2-18x10.webp 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px\" title=\"\">\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1849efa elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1849efa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-eho5o\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">The endothelium is the innermost layer within the blood vessels that helps maintain the tone of the blood vessels. The endothelium integrity is important for organ perfusion, as well as the balancing of blood clotting and the human immune system. <\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block29\">This layer of the blood vessel dilates and contracts in reaction to bodily physiological responses. In the case of endothelial dysfunction, it would mean that the blood vessel has an impaired ability to dilate and contract, causing it to be strict and stiff. It has been established that <strong>endothelial dysfunction can be caused by several co-morbids, such as diabetes, hypertension, smoking, and metabolic syndromes.<\/strong><\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-dn819\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">On a related note, ED has long been considered a hallmark of underlying endothelial dysfunction, since blood vessels that have endothelial dysfunction are unable to dilate to contribute to satisfactory erection. Because of the association of endothelial dysfunction with many other underlying co-morbids,<strong> ED is often considered a marker of impaired overall health status<\/strong>, including an indication early cardiovascular events (heart attack).<\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-1gbrk\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">According to other recent researches and data<a class=\"JFeVX Lvqid\" href=\"https:\/\/manage.wix.com\/dashboard\/3c559c23-91ca-4f51-9429-f2e89bf7ab3c\/blog\/create-post#_ftn2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hook=\"WebLink\">[2]<\/a>, it has also shown that<strong> COVID-19 infection may also directly result in <\/strong><strong>endothelial dysfunction<\/strong> (by inducing intracellular oxidative stress, as well as systemic inflammatory response). Anxiety, depression), Dr Jannini\u2019s paper has managed to show that the prevalence of ED found is not only a consequence of the psychological burden of lockdown, but also prominently due to organic factors, among which <strong>endothelial dysfunction is the proposed most likely culprit<\/strong>. It has concluded that ED could be both a short term and long term complication of COVID-19.<\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-1ffpt\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">In his study, it was highlighted in the discussions that the results of the study agree with the pathophysiological mechanisms linking ED, endothelial dysfunction, and COVID-19.<\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-dthna\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke _5HuoZ _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">Therefore, other than the importance of treating ED itself, <strong>investigating the other possible causes of ED <\/strong>becomes of paramount importance in times like these:<strong> Identifying and treating potential comorbidities<\/strong> would have potentially beneficial effects on erectile function, while at the same time the precautions for contraction of COVID-19 or developing more severe forms of COVID-19
