PrEP?<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block6\">PrEP is a daily pill that <a href=\"https:\/\/hemedicalclinic.com\/cn\/sexual-health\/hiv-test-malaysia\/\">reduces the risk of HIV infection<\/a>. It&#8217;s a drug that works in the same way as malaria prevention tablets or birth control pills.<\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block7\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-ec0j1\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">This is not to be confused with PEP, which stands for Post-Exposure Prophylaxis. It is used after a person has been diagnosed with HIV.<\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block8\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-6fi64\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">PrEP is a highly effective HIV prevention technique when taken on a regular basis. PrEP, when taken regularly, decreases the risk of contracting HIV from sex by around 99 percent, according to studies. When taken regularly, PrEP decreases the risk of contracting HIV by at least 74% in people who inject drugs. If PrEP is not taken on a regular basis, it will be ineffective.<\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><div id=\"viewer-o7gm\" class=\"MVWWq\"><div class=\"Oe8je hVPcz\"><figure you:<\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block17\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><ol class=\"jozXz _5HuoZ\"><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-6h84\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">You have had anal or vaginal sex in the past 6 months and also:<\/span><\/p><ol class=\"jozXz _5HuoZ\"><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-3kr2q\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">have a HIV-positive sexual partner, especially if the partner has an unknown or detectable viral load<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-7p6tk\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">have been practising unprotected sex<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-c7p9d\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">have been diagnosed with sexually transmitted disease in the past 6 months<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ol><\/li><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-eimnm\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">You share needles, syringes or other equipment to inject drugs<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-61j7g\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">You have been prescribed PEP before and also:<\/span><\/p><ol class=\"jozXz _5HuoZ\"><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-fgm58\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">reported continuous high-risk behaviour<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-58osl\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">have been on multiple courses of PEP<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ol><\/li><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-dsrte\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">You are a woman considering to get pregnant and have a partner with HIV.<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ol><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block18\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><div id=\"viewer-bf85j\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block19\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-9smlj\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\"><strong>What are the drugs in PrEP?<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block21\">PrEP drugs are made up of two different types of antiviral medications:<\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block22\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><ol class=\"jozXz _5HuoZ\"><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-1fcpa\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">Emcitarabine<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-57ft5\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ol><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block23\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-30ts6\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">These tablets are sold under the brand name Truvada.<\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><div id=\"viewer-c85qh\" class=\"MVWWq\"><div class=\"Oe8je\"><figure class=\"_7stsb\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" data-hook=\"imageViewer\"><div id=\"c85qh\" class=\"OVtFi _0vvPN UnG-6\"><img decoding=\"async\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\"><strong>How effective is PrEP?<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block31\">Different sexual orientation categories have different protection rates, for the most part. According to the four studies included in the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention&#8217;s Interim Guidelines, PrEP provides HIV protection in the range of 50% to 84%. In other journals, protection rates as high as 99% have also been documented.<\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block32\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-91oj1\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">All must remember that PrEP is only one of the many HIV prevention strategies available. Having said that, PrEP is not fail proof and should be used in conjunction with other preventative measures such as:<\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block33\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><ul class=\"ANmgQ _5HuoZ\"><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-dm4g8\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">regular practice of protected sexual intercourse (e.g.: proper condom usage).<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-dckjp\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">getting proper treatment for HIV infected partner.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-71e\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">avoid exchanging or sharing needles and other injecting equipment.<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block34\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-ajlqk\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\"><strong>How to start PrEP?<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block36\">If you think PrEP might be right for you, consult with a doctor. Only a health care provider can prescribe PrEP.<\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block37\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-fik1g\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">You must first take an HIV test to ensure that you are HIV-free before starting PrEP. It is recommended that you take these tablets for at least 7 days before engaging in any potentially dangerous activities.<\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block38\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-dur2c\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">You&#8217;ll need to see the doctor every three months for follow-up appointments, HIV testing, and prescription refills when on PrEP. You can take the PrEP medicine for as long as you want. It is strongly recommended that you take it for as long as you are at risk of contracting HIV.<\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block40\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-mknq\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">You may feel the need to stop taking PrEP if:<\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block41\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><ul class=\"ANmgQ _5HuoZ\"><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-vdsb\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">you change your lifestyle making your risk of getting HIV becomes low.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"I-VPx\" dir=\"auto\"><p id=\"viewer-8hnmr\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">you have side effects from the medicine that are causing nuisance to your life.<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block42\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-d4r4i\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">However, it is recommended that PrEP to be continued for at least 4 weeks after the last high-risk encounter. It&#8217;s also a good idea to have HIV and other STD screenings three months after the last risky incident. Remember that PrEP just reduces the risk of HIV, not the risk of other STDs.<\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block44\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-a2sk5\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\">The other options is by taking \u201cOn-demand\u201d PrEP\u2014 also known as PrEP 2-1-1\u2014is an alternative method of dosing that may speak to these concerns, making PrEP an option for more people than ever before. PrEP 2-1-1 is named for its schedule of dosing: 2 pills are taken 2-24 hours before sex, 1 pill 24 hours after the initial dose, and one final dose 24 hours later<\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block46\">\u00a0<\/div><div data-breakout=\"normal\"><p id=\"viewer-71olv\" class=\"xEOXg iKTke FH4ow _9-Qxn\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"bFOZY\"><strong>What are the side effects of PrEP?<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div><div data-hook=\"rcv-block47\">The majority of patients have little or no negative side effects.
